Woot Yarn for my Awesome New Project

Mon Jan 26, 2009, 12:21 AM
Got out to Joann fabrics this weekend for some yarn. Gah, I wish there was a good craft store in this town. I had to take two different buses to get to Joann. I got four good-size skeins of yarn, a pair of needles and some embroidery thread (but the thread is for a separate thing).

I just started knitting the project today - a Tardis. Yes, a Tardis. (If you don't know what a Tardis is, google it or watch Dr. Who!) I'm really excited. From the looks of what I've started, it'll be about 8"x8" on the base and somewhere around 15" tall. I'll knit the four sides and top and bottom and then sew all the pieces together. I'm starting with the top and bottom since they're just squares. The sides have multiple colors that apparently call for intarsia knitting and duplicate stitching, which I haven't done before. It'll be interesting, at least. I got seven rows in today when I realized there was a hole in it and one of the rows was completely messed up. So I ripped out the whole thing, and had to cast on three more times before i got it right.. frustrating.

As awesome as I'm thinking this will be, it's going to be quite a project. It's supposed to be stuffed so I have to think about filling as well as a lining so as not to worry about stuffing coming out between stitches. I'm thinking of getting a big foam block to put inside, with just a bit of batting around, since it'll keep it's shape better that way than just plain stuffing. Of course, I'm no where near needing to start on that part yet, but it can't hurt to start thinking about it.

Ooh, and my friend wants me to teach her to knit. She crochets, but she wants to try knitting a scarf now to see how she likes it. It's kind of exciting. And who knows, maybe I'll get her to teach me to crochet once I finish with this project!
